After the screws are removed and the latch plate should pull out of the door with ease. If it's stuck or won't move using a nail file to scrape around the edges of the latch plate. This may help free the plate.

You can now move on to preparing the new door strike plate for installation. With the wood screws that were included with your new handles, screw the latch plate onto the inside of the doorjamb. Be careful not to tighten too much the screws, as this can damage the strike plate.

If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in the correct position, shut and open the door to check if it latches and closes correctly. If not then you'll have to adjust the strike plate either up or down, or move it forward or back until the door shuts and latches properly.

If the door is still moving or jiggles, you may have to enlarge your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more frequent on older doors. It can be caused by wear and tear hinges that aren't narrow, the wrong size latch or damaged strike plate. If this is the case, follow the same procedure to adjust the strike plate, but with a metal file instead of an hammer and chisel.

Removal of the Latch

The latch is an angled metal piece that slides in and out of a hole on the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes this latch forward which allows you to open the door. It also hooks into a hole on the door's frame so that the door is closed. If your door wiggles when you close it, replacing the latch may be all that's needed to fix it.

The screws that secure the door latch are difficult to locate, but you can usually use a screwdriver to make a small hole on the trim plate and pry the latch off. After taking off the trim plate you will be able to pull off the latch and the bolts that hold it, as well as the spindle.

If the latch won't come out you can try using a paper clip or a tool to spring it loose from the handle mechanism. Place the item in the slot for the latch that is recessed. gently move it around until you feel the latch and handle start to split. You may have to repeat this procedure several times before you are able to remove the latch.

Once the old latch is removed and the old latch is removed, you should be able to move the new latch into the slot without any problems. Use your new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it's correctly positioned in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers.

Take note of the backset (the distance between the centre of the large hole on the front of the door and the edge) before installing the new handle. Also, make sure that the latch size on the new handle is a good match to the measurement of your existing handle.

You'll require a new cylinder for your lock if replacing the latch and handle, or your old one is damaged. If you're not changing locks the new lock will fit in your existing recess, and work with your existing keys. Select a latch with rectangular cover plates that match your old handles.


Remove the cover plate
